27th ESCRS Winter Meeting: A Key Scientific Gathering in Vilamoura

The 27th edition of the Winter Meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) took place in Vilamoura, Portugal, from 10–12 March 2023, bringing together over 1,300 participants. Held at the Centro de Congressos do Algarve, in the heart of Vilamoura’s marina, the event offered a high-level platform for the exchange of the latest research, clinical advancements, and best practices in cataract and refractive surgery.

The core mission of the Winter Meeting is to reach geographic areas where the ESCRS Annual Congress does not usually take place, thereby attracting new audiences who may not typically attend the main event. This strategic outreach enables the society to expand both its scientific impact and its geographical influence across the ophthalmological community.

As the core PCO for ESCRS, MCI Switzerland was entrusted with the full organization of the 27th Winter Meeting, delivering the project from start to finish. This mission was carried out in close collaboration with our colleagues from MCI UK, who managed the coordination of committee meetings through their role as Association Management & Consulting (AM&C) partner for ESCRS.

For the 2023 edition, ESCRS made the bold decision to opt for an exclusively in-person format, following two years of fully virtual Winter Meetings. This return to face-to-face interaction was considered a test run—perfectly suited to the smaller scale and budget of the event, compared to the society’s main congress. It also served to gauge the post-pandemic engagement of participants in a more intimate, in-person setting.
