MLA engages current and potential members with month-long programming

In an uncertain time when many associations are struggling both to retain existing members and bring in new ones, the Medical Library Association (MLA) introduced an Open Membership Month — designed to help existing members get the most from their membership and to let potential members experience the benefits of joining MLA at no cost. MCI USA’s MLA team mobilized current members to reach out to their networks to let nonmembers know that MLA was offering a month-long free membership.

We also encouraged existing members to take advantage of educational offerings and live events, such as webinars, meet-and-greets, networking events, and an open science session, as well as to sign up for MLA’s 2021 annual conference.

Results:

  •  141 non members joined and 13 converted to full membership after.
  •  Members received 40+ hours of continuing education and events.
  •  30 MLA caucuses organized 38 live events at no charge to members.
