Unlocking AI potential in associations: a benchmark on AI adoption

According to the latest market research by Goldman Sachs, the Artificial Intelligence market is on a relentless upward trajectory, with investments forecast projected to reach $200 billion globally by 2025, and a compound annual growth rate of 36.8% (MarketsandMarkets).

AI-enabled devices are ubiquitous, integrated into nearly 77% of the technology landscape. Amid this transformative era, AI is revolutionising marketing and customer engagement, adding substantial value by streamlining community building and boosting operational efficiency.

Business leaders, particularly 84% of C-level executives, have placed their trust in AI's capacity to propel growth. What about associations? Where do they stand with AI adoption?

MCI launched the pulse survey on Associations’ Adoption of AI to:

  • Gage the current landscape of AI usage in associations.
  • Uncover concerns faced by associations in integrating AI.
  • Identify opportunities for associations to better equip themselves for the future.

Key Findings:

  • Limited AI Integration: An overwhelming 82% of survey respondents have either not yet integrated AI into their operations or have done so only in a very minor capacity.
  • Underutilisation of AI in Customisation: A significant 77% of respondents have not begun or have barely started using AI to enhance member customisation.
  • Common AI Usage: Among those associations that have integrated AI, the most prevalent applications are in Content Creation and Marketing.
  • Ethical Concerns: Alarmingly, 71% of surveyed associations have not published an AI ethics statement and 60% have not established an internal policy for AI use.

Overall concerns shared by respondents largely focused on IP security and infringement, privacy issues and ethics. Some of the challenges highlighted included a lack of strategy for the entire association, leading to a siloed approach, and being overwhelmed by the number of tools, not knowing where to start.

The survey's findings underscore the substantial untapped potential for AI integration within associations. As the AI revolution reshapes industries, associations that remain hesitant may risk being left behind. MCI recommends that all associations develop and publish a clear AI ethics statement and establish a robust internal policy for AI usage. These foundational steps will not only address ethical concerns but also ensure responsible and strategic AI adoption.
